Education and Training
The Long Reef education and training program provides patrolling members with the knowledge they need to create a professional water safety / rescue service. Long Reef also focuses on retaining proficiencies to ensure skills and abilities remain current and relevant.To provide a safe beach and aquatic environment it is required that every patrol has three (3) Bronze Medallion qualified patrol members, with the following additional qualifications:1 x Advanced Resuscitation Technique (ART) qualification1 x Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) crewman qualification1 x IRB driver qualification1 x SM Basic Beach management

Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) - Bronze Medallion
The Bronze Medallion is the minimum requirement for a surf life saver. You must be over the age of 15 to train for your Bronze and demonstrate proficiency in:
- Safety and well being
- Surf awareness and skills
- The human body
- Defibrillation and basic oxygen techniques
- First aid
- Radio Operations
- Rescue techniques
- Carries and supports
- Beach Management
The Bronze Medallion course is run at Long Reef several times each season and goes for 6-8 weeks depending on prior knowledge. All those interested in training for their Certificate II must be a financial member of Long Reef SLSC.
To commence training for the Bronze Medallion/PUA21012 Certificate II in Public Safety you must meet the following course prerequisites:
- Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
- Complete an unaided swim (goggles/masks permitted) of 400 metre swim in nine (9) minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water course which will be observed prior to the candidate undertaking any water training or assessment activities, evidence of which must be provided to the Assessor on the appropriate form prior to commencement of the assessment for this qualification.

Advanced Resuscitation Certificate - ARC
There must be an Advanced Resuscitation Certificate (ARC) holder on every patrol. To train for the ARC award a candidate must be a minimum of 15 years old and demonstrate proficient knowledge of basic resuscitation, perform 1 and 2 person patient assessment and EAR / CPR for an adults, children and infant, perform oxygen aided resuscitation technique and demonstrate and perform oxygen therapy using an airbag resuscitator unit. IRB Driver & Crewman
You must be over the age of 17 to train for IRB Driver and 16 to train for your IRB Crewman. Candidates must be able to demonstrate pre and post operation procedures of an IRB; Iaunch and drive / crew an IRB in a safe manner with potential hazards and environment conditions including roll over prevention and procedure; IRB rescue procedures.

Other Qualification Offered Through Long Reef SLSC
Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)
Covers the knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in basic lifesaving operations. This course is also the minimum water safety qualification for Junior Activity supervision.
Covers the skills and knowledge to perform basic communication practices.
Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management
Covers the skills, knowledge and experience to manage a beach in emergency and non-emergency situations.
Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue
Covers the skills and knowledge to participate in search and rescue operations.
Covers advanced skills and knowledge to manage emergency situations in autonomous situations.
All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Operator Induction
ATV Operator Inductions are available for club members who are a minimum of 17 years of age, proficient in at least one SLSA Award and hold a current, valid NSW Driver License (provisional or above). If you are interested in participating in an ATV induction and you fulfil the requirements please contact your club’s Chief Training Officer.
Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Crewperson
Covers with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an IRB in surf rescue operations.
Silver Medallion Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Driver
Covers the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage an IRB in surf rescue operations.
Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Operator
Covers the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage a Rescue Water Craft (RWC) in lifesaving operations.
Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
Develops skills and knowledge to use oxygen, airway management devices, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to conscious or unconscious breathing causalities.
Apply (Senior) First Aid
Develops skills and knowledge to manage emergency first aid situations until professional medical support is available. This course is recognised by WorkCover NSW.
Covers the skills and knowledge required to carry and administer Methoxyflurane.
Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to manage injured casualties with suspected spinal injuries in an aquatic environment and in emergency situations.
